The South East Governors of Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi States today flagged off the South East Economic and Security Summit in Owerri, Imo State. Also in attendance were dignitaries from all walks of life, who assembled to chat a new architecture for the economic and security development of the region.
Delivering his welcoming address, the Imo State Governor, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma urged the people of the South East to pause for a while to identify what has gone wrong in the region.
According to Governor Uzodimma, the Igbos are trailblazers who has recorded incredible accomplishments in Nigeria both in intellectual, scientific and technological fields before and after independence and are listed and recognised in many publications as among the great achievers in the world. He declared that the Igbo technological ingenuity is still alive and kicking.
The Governor lamented that the Igbos are no longer united, nor speak with one voice, "We have allowed ourselves to be divided, and as the scripture said, a house divided against itself cannot stand"
He regretted a situation where some Igbo's no longer want to be referred to as Igbos, an action he described as a sorry and sad story.
Governor Uzodimma asked the Igbos not to fold their hands and allow themselves to drift further into the bottomless abyss of insecurity, but should rather accept the challenge and jolt themselves out of the slumber of self-defeat. To achieve this, he called on the Igbos to start by telling themselves some home truths.
Speaking further, the Imo State Governor stated that the challenge of insecurity is now bringing the South East together in partnership and in cooperation, saying, "Onye ndi iro gbara gburugburu n'eche ndu ya nche mgbe nile./ He who is surrounded by enemies, guards his life always". - "We are surrounded by dangerous criminals who want to decimate us...we are witnessing the worst form of insecurity where human blood, held sacred by Igbos is being shed recklessly; where human beings are beheaded, and where non-state actors are stopping Ndi Igbo from going out to seek for their daily bread" Uzodimma bemoaned.
Governor Uzodimma went further to insist that there is need for the Igbos turn within themselves for solutions, pool resources together and to cooperate in order to be able to contain the dangers posed by insecurity.
He reminded the audience of the golden age when the defunct Igbo State Union, was the catalyst for the private sector-driven development projects witnessed in Igboland such as schools, hospitals, markets etc. He called for a paradigm shift in which the Igbos will reinvent the spirit of the Igbo State Union to meet the challenges of today.
Governor Uzodimma called for support for Ohaneze Ndi Igbo and suggested the floating of a South East Economic Development Fund to finance research that will bring prosperity to the people.
