ANOTHER PHANTOM PROTEST IN ABUJA - A Prelude To More Sinister Plans.
Prince Eze Ugochukwu
In a 2022 column, Jonah Goldberg coined the "Ledeen Doctrine", named after neoconservative historian Michael Ledeen. The "doctrine" states: "Every ten years or so, the United States needs to pick up some small crappy little country and throw it against the wall, just to show the world we mean business."
With their planned protest in Abuja, the Imo State PDP want to show us again that they mean business. A repetitive pattern has evolved. The damage previously inflicted on Imo State may repeat itself if care is not taken. It is history playing out.
Now look at their pattern of sinister business.
On 20th January 2020, barely five days after the swearing-in of Governor Uzodimma, the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State in a convoy of several vehicles embarked on a protest at the United Nations, European Union (EU), French and other embassies in Abuja. According to them, they were *expressing their anger* over the judgement that sacked Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha as governor of Imo State.
The protesters were seen chanting songs of war as they marched across the city of Abuja.
What followed after the protests in Abuja were similar marches in Owerri by the same PDP. This time, they were more vehement and told pressmen that they will shut down governance and make Imo State ungovernable.
Eventually, these protests in Abuja and Owerri culminated into the
unleashing of mayhem on Imo State.
In a well-planned attack, gunmen arrived at the Owerri prison in large numbers in several Hilux pick-up vans and Sienna Buses armed with sophisticated weapons and immediately engaged the security personnel on duty in a fierce gun battle. They also burnt down the police headquarters in Owerri. By the end of these operations, over 1,800 prisoners, criminals, armed robbers, killers and kidnappers were released from detention.
Then the calamities began. In a well-choreographed routine, police stations were attacked, criminals released, weapons collected, and officers killed. Politicians belonging to the ruling APC were massacred, their bodies dismembered. Traditional rulers were eliminated, and known leaders sympathetic to government were beheaded and their homes burnt. It was very horrible.
There were no credible reasons for protesting and disrupting the peace.
That Governor Uzodimma won a victory at the Supreme Court was not enough reason for mayhem, after all, he lost at the Tribunal and Court of Appeal without any incident of protestation.
People criticized the protests. They cautioned against the threats by the PDP. The security agencies warned that it would lead to collateral damages with deaths of innocent Imo citizens and even deaths of security agents and that it would moreover damage peace and stability throughout the state. But the leadership of PDP refused to listen.
True to the threats from PDP, Imo state went up in flames with arson, killings, kidnappings, beheadings, and even cannibalism. It took a lot of effort and courage for Governor Hope Uzodimma to push back the killers and bandits.
Imo people cannot forget how leaders of the PDP and their supporters went around radio and television stations and social media to lampoon the efforts of the governor to restore law and order, peace and harmony. Rather, they were stringent in their condemnation of the fight against insecurity while eulogising the criminals as innocent youths.
But as the saying goes, things that have happened in the past will or tend to happen again in one way or another.
As if playing from their old script, the Imo PDP is about to protest in Abuja against the Imo State government. Again, they *want to express their anger* against the government. As their previous protests left a trail of killings, destructions and chaos in the state, their new protest is nothing but another campaign of deception and propaganda against the entire people of Imo state. We will not forget the killings that followed. Another sinister plan is unfolding.
In the run-up to the November 2023 governorship election, Governor Uzodimma's ratings have remained very high and he is set to win the election with a landslide.
Motivated by a desire to enhance and strengthen their dwindling political presence and electability, the Imo PDP has gone back to its old laboratory to manufacture fearmongering, misrepresentation, and lies, with a sprinkle of killings here and there just to exact the desired political effect.
In summary, the planned protest in far away Abuja is morally flawed and not justified. It is not anchored on any good intentions and Imo people did not clamour for it. The evil intent of the planners will never outweigh the good deeds accomplished by His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma.
The Imo State government is determined to fight the criminal phenomenon of politically induced and instigated killings in Imo State.
There is no time, as politically contrived mayhem has turned into a scourge in the state and it requires that first and foremost the head of the snake be cut off in order to nip the crimes in the bud.
