GOVERNOR HOPE UZODIMMA To Formally Unveil/Inaugurate The New Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri

"To our amiable friendly Governor, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Odidika Uzodimma, we lack adequate words to convey our deep sincere gratitude to you for your uncommon interest in us, especially for creating the enabling environment for excellence to thrive in the state"* ~ Management.

On Friday, May 5, 2023, Imo people from all walks of life and beyond will roll out their drums in thanksgiving to witness the official commissioning of some landmark projects at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, formerly known as the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

This upcoming historic event is  sequel to the law signed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari on the 17th of November, 2022 for the upgrade of the hospital to a Teaching Hospital.

For the records, the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri has come to be acknowledged as one of the busiest healthcare facilities in Nigeria with over 300.000 patients attended to annually.

The formal unveiling/inauguration of the Teaching Hospital will be done by the Special  Guest of honour, and the amiable Governor of Imo State. His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Odidika Uzodimma. The Governor will also at the same event lay the Foundation stone for a new E-library building for use by the FUTO Medical School at the premises of the Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri.

Also to be inaugurated by the Health Ministers, Dr Osagie Ehanite and Hon.Joseph Ekumankama, Minister of State, Include The Medical Oxygen Production Plant, 60 KVA Solar Power Grid the Assisted Reproduction Center(IVF).

Apart from these projects to be inaugurated, the Teaching Hospital, under the visionary management of Dr Kingsley Achigbu has completed other numerous structures at the Centre. These include building and equipping the Renal Dialysis Centre, construction of the Research Center, Construction of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging(M.R.I) Building and the construction of an Isolation Centre. The fully equipped Outreach Centre and the construction of the House Officer's quarters in the Umuamusa Outreach centre have already been completed.

On-going projects are the World Class Accident and Trauma Centre, the first of its kind in the South East, the Construction of the Specialist Outpatients Building Complex, plus the Construction of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic/Maternity Ward.

Other ongoing projects include; but are not limited to the construction of the new Ophthalmology complex, the Construction of a 110-bed Medical ward complex with a stroke treatment unit, the Construction of a modern hospital canteen and hospital guesthouse complex and the Construction of the central hospital stores complex. Also renovated are so many dilapidated old buildings such as the Histopathology building, and the Pharmacy building. the main theatre complex, the General Patient Clinic block and a new CSSD block Other projects attracted to the institution by the present management are a 10 bedded fully equipped ICU and a liquid Oxygen project with the accompaniment of 100 piped beds.

So much new equipment has also been procured to enhance services in the Centre with the expansion of hitherto existing clinical services and the introduction of new services. These include Neurosurgery, Laparoscopic/Minimal access (pinhole) Surgery, Laser Eye Surgery and Knee and hip replacement Surgeries,  to mention a few.

The Centre is also poised to flag off its IVF services for the use of Ndi Imo and Nigerians at large._These projects will no doubt ameliorate the constraint of availability of bed spaces in the hospital largely due to its ever-growing clientele in the face of inherited ageing physical infrastructure that is struggling to catch up with the growth of the hospital.

Inarguably, this quantum leap couldn't have been possible if not for the Industrial harmony that exists in the place and the open-door policy adopted by the Management. Through prudent management of scarce resources, Dr Kingsley Achigbu and his Management team have been able to turn around the fortunes of the Teaching Hospital.

No doubt, the upgrading of the the Federal Medical Centre into a Federal University Teaching and the provision of these infrastructures shows the premium President Buhari's administration places on the healthcare and well-being of the citizenry.
